Diabetes is the main cause of limb amputation in
developed countries . Figures released by the
International Diabetes Federation estimate that a limb
is lost to diabetes every 30 seconds !
Around 85% of amputations are preceded by a foot
ulcer. One of the main contributing factors in the
development of a foot ulcer is neuropathy. Neuropathy,
or loss of protective sensation , is prevalent in around
25-40% of the diabetes population.
It is essential for the diabetes practitioner to assess the level of neuropathy in their patient . It has been shown
that the intervention of a diabetic foot care team can
reduce the incidence of amputation by up to 85% .
One of the most important tools in the armoury of the
foot care team is the MONOFILAMENT.
